Circa 1950s-1960s.
Presented here is a vintage Croton Nivada Grenchen alarm watch in an all stainless steel case with a black dial featuring an alarm function. The bezel has 12 hour numerals and rotates allowing for a secondary time zone monitoring. The Nivada signed crown sets and winds smoothly and the push-button crown above it works perfectly actuating the alarm wherever the red arrow tip hand is set. The snap case back is two pieces with the innermost cap housing the stem that works with the striking mechanism for the alarm and the outermost cap that reads: 3984857, Nivada S.A. Grenchen, Croton, Swiss. Beneath the dial is an unadjusted Swiss Croton Nivada Grenchen Cricket 000 manual hand winding movement with 17 jewels that runs strong and kept great time over a 24 hour period. Serial: J3MV/ B 4796 HK. The Cricket calibre, equipped with two barrels, one for the movement and the other for the alarm, emits a sound reminiscent of the chirping of a cricket – hence its name. This watch measures approximately 35mm wide (excluding the crown) x 42mm from lug end to lug end.
Winding: make sure that the crown at 3h is completely pushed in. Watch: turn crown towards 6h. Alarm: turn cown towards 12h.
Setting: pull the crown at 3h completely and turn it towards 6h. Push the crown completely down after setting.
Setting Alarm: press down the pusher at 2h completely. The crown at 3h pops up. Turn the crown towards 12h to set the the alarm hand to the desired time. Push the crown completely down again.
Disabling Alarm: press the pusher at 2h halfway down. The crown is set freely turnable in both directions. In this position the alarm is disabled. Never pull the pusher at 2h.
