Circa 1961.
What we have here is a rare, very desirable Hamilton K-475 watch. This watch is considered to be the Holy Grail of Hamilton Watches, or mechanical asymmetrical watches. It was available only for one year, 1961 priced at $100, or $110 with the metal band. Estimated production is approx. 1,300 of these fine watches. It features a cross hatch pattern on the lugs, which is echoed onto the center of the two tone black and gold dial. This design was carried over onto the option metal band, which is rarely seen today. A gold crescent sweeps along the right side of the black dial, and the entire watch is offset to the right. It is certainly a very bold and eye catching design. Notice the stem and crown winding at the 4:30 position, a very aggressive avant-garde design.
Out of the 50+ Hamilton automatic "K" models released in the mid 1950s up until 1961, the K-475 is one of the very few that showcases a date window and a crown located between the 4 o'clock and 5 o'clock marker. The 10K yellow gold-filled case comes with yellow embossed markers on a yellow rim dial with black background. The calendar is completely functional with the date changing at midnight. This timepiece is powered by a Hamilton caliber 690 automatic movement with 17 jewels that has been cleaned, oiled, timed and bench tested for 24 hours keeping good time. The automatic 690 movement was only used in this watch. The inside of the back case reads: Hamilton W. Co., Lancaster PA., 10K goldfilled, S602560, S&W. Measuring at approximately 35mm in width x 39mm from lug end to end, this stunning wristwatch is a great example of Hamilton's mid-century modern creations that still commands attention decades later.
