Circa 1962.
Proudly offered here is a vintage Hamilton Sherwood S, a 10K yellow gold-filled tank watch paired with a teakwood on brass backed dial. This excellent timepiece is gorgeous and comes fitted with brand new genuine lizard straps. These wood dial watches were all made with brass dials unlike most every other Hamilton watch that were made with a sterling silver dial. In 1961, the head of Hamilton's styling department, Jean-Pierre Hold proposed a watch with a wood dial. How the idea first came to fruition, no one knows. The idea was met with acceptance and was turned over to the research and development department to be transformed into reality. The project fell into the arms of Martin Ryan and HD "Chip" Weeks and the rest is history, as these two individuals made Mr. Hold's dream come true, along with other hard working staff at the Hamilton factory. The movement is a strong running Hamilton grade 770 manual hand winding movement with 22 jewels, considered to be the best movement made by the Hamilton Watch Co. The inside back case reads: Hamilton W. Co, Lancaster PA., 10K Goldfilled, S724172, S&W. The watch sets and winds smoothly and is quadruple signed by Hamilton as seen on the crown, movement, dial, and case. This watch measures approximately 24mm wide (excluding the crown) x 35mm from lug end to lug end.
